UN Calls on India and Bangladesh to Resolve Border Humanitarian Crisis Through Dialogue

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, has urged India and Bangladesh to address concerns regarding the “push-in” of individuals at their shared border through constructive dialogue that upholds human rights and dignity.
Responding to inquiries during a regular briefing at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday, Dujarric emphasized that both nations share the responsibility of resolving border tensions. The comments followed reports highlighting the precarious conditions of women and children stranded along the frontier, where many face acute food shortages and lack adequate shelter.

When pressed on whether the international community has shifted its focus away from the border situation toward other global crises, Dujarric maintained that the core of the issue remains the obligation of the involved states to prioritize humanitarian standards.
In the same session, Dujarric addressed questions concerning the prospects for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees, specifically regarding the role of the newly elected President of the UN General Assembly, who previously served as the High Representative for Rohingya issues during the tenure of Bangladesh’s interim government.

While acknowledging the background of the incoming General Assembly President and the Secretary-General’s own extensive history as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Dujarric noted that the responsibilities of the General Assembly presidency are distinct. He stated that while the General Assembly will focus on its broader legislative and operational agenda, the specific efforts to address the Rohingya crisis will continue independently as part of the UN’s ongoing commitment to the displaced population.
