Two Men Booked Under Cyber Law Following Mob Attack Over Social Media Posts in Netrokona

Police in the Kalmakanda sub-district of Netrokona have filed a case under the Cyber Security Act against two men following allegations of inciting religious hatred through inflammatory social media posts. The legal action comes in the wake of a localized surge of violence that saw an angry mob vandalize the homes of the accused on Sunday evening.
According to the police case filing, the controversy began last Friday when one of the accused published a post on Facebook regarding ongoing protests in India. Authorities allege the language used in the post was intended to stir religious tension, a situation further exacerbated when the second accused added a comment deemed religiously offensive. Investigators noted that the nature of these interactions posed a significant threat to communal harmony, leading to the formal registration of the case under Section 26(1) of the Cyber Security Act, 2026.

As news of the posts spread, a group of people converged on the residences of the two men, causing extensive property damage. Family members of the accused reported that they were forced to flee for their safety as the mob ransacked their homes. While expressing condemnation for any potential wrongdoing committed by their relatives, family members questioned the justification for the targeted destruction of their property, noting that they remain in a state of deep insecurity.
Officer-in-Charge of Kalmakanda Police Station, Mostafizur Rahman, confirmed that law enforcement intervened to disperse the crowd and restore order. He stated that while the local situation has since stabilized, police remain on high alert to prevent further unrest.
