Three Satkhira men named Nazrul Islam face court rulings as one secures bail while two are sent to jail

SATKHIRA — Three prominent individuals all named Nazrul Islam appeared in courts across Bangladesh on Monday, leading to a series of divergent legal outcomes that have gripped public attention in Satkhira. While one secured bail from the High Court, the other two were remanded into custody by a district magistrate.
Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4, was granted bail by the High Court in a case filed at Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka on July 22. The case, initiated by the uncle of a young woman, alleges assault and attempted murder stemming from a controversy involving a leaked video. Following the incident, Gazi Nazrul Islam was expelled from the Jamaat-e-Islami party.
Conversely, Md. Nazrul Islam, the former chairman of the Satkhira Zila Parishad and general secretary of the local Awami League unit, was ordered to prison by the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Bilash Mondal. He was presented in court in connection with five murder cases filed recently, which allege his involvement in the extrajudicial killings of opposition activists between 2014 and 2017. The court has scheduled the next hearing for October 29.
In a separate proceeding, Burigoalini Union Parishad Chairman Nazrul Islam, also known as Haji Nazrul, was denied bail by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. He appeared alongside his associate, Bishwajit Mondal, after the expiration of a six-week anticipatory bail granted by the High Court. The two men face charges related to extortion, assault, and threats involving a flood control embankment project overseen by the Bangladesh Water Development Board.
Public prosecutor Sheikh Abdus Sattar confirmed the detention of both Md. Nazrul Islam and Haji Nazrul following their respective hearings. Meanwhile, the simultaneous appearance of the three high-profile figures, all sharing the same name, has fueled widespread commentary on social media platforms across the region. Local residents have noted the unusual coincidence, with many observers highlighting the stark contrast in the legal fates of the three men.
