Five arrested for attempted murder of BNP leader in Dhaka Pallabi area

DHAKA — Police have arrested five individuals, including a primary suspect identified as Rubel, for the attempted murder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Alamgir Hossain in the Pallabi area of the capital.
The arrests were confirmed on Tuesday by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Mirpur Division. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rakib Khan stated that the suspects were apprehended during overnight raids conducted in Savar, Gazipur, and Kushtia.
The four other suspects taken into custody are Bappa, also known as Shakil, Hamidur, also known as Makhon, Parvez, and Rabbi. According to police, investigators recovered a pistol, two rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and two vehicles—including a private car reportedly used during the commission of the crime. Additionally, authorities seized 1,000 yaba tablets from the suspects.
The incident occurred last Friday afternoon while Hossain, a member of the BNP’s 23rd ward committee for the Dhaka South City Corporation, was at a tea stall in Section 11, Block B of Mirpur. Witnesses reported that assailants arrived in a private car and opened fire indiscriminately, leaving both Hossain and a passing female pedestrian injured.
Hossain, who sustained three gunshot wounds to his head and back, remains under medical treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Following the attack, he alleged that four assailants emerged from a vehicle to target him before fleeing the scene in the same car. He identified two of the attackers as Rubel and Bappi, both associated with the Jubo League.
Following the shooting, the suspects fled Dhaka to evade capture. Deputy Commissioner Khan confirmed that detectives successfully traced the group using information technology and surveillance tactics. The victim’s wife has since filed a formal case with the Pallabi Police Station.
