Tragic Death of SSC Candidate Two Days Before Achieving GPA-5 Results

A 17-year-old student from Brahmanpara upazila in Cumilla district achieved a perfect Grade Point Average (GPA-5) in his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, two days after he was fatally electrocuted.
Shahriar Hossain, known as Shihab, died on Saturday after coming into contact with a live electrical wire while drying clothes on the rooftop of his family home in Manra village. The incident occurred while he was visiting his village to attend his uncle’s wedding.
According to family members, Shahriar was hanging clothes on the roof cornice when he brushed against wiring used for decorative wedding lights. The contact caused a severe electric shock, which resulted in him falling from the roof. He was rushed to the Kasba Upazila Health Complex, where medical personnel declared him dead. He was laid to rest at his family burial ground that same evening.
Shahriar was the only son of Tofazzal Hossain, who resides in Dhaka for professional reasons. He had recently completed his secondary education at the Dhaka Airport Government High School under the Dhaka Education Board and was the eldest of three siblings.
Family members described the student as a diligent and quiet individual who had shown great academic promise. His uncle, Ziaul Haque, noted that the family had high expectations for his results, making the timing of his death particularly devastating.
Local authorities have expressed deep condolences over the tragedy. Atiqur Rahman, chairman of Shashidal Union Parishad, described the incident as heartbreaking, noting the profound grief of the parents who lost their only son on the eve of his academic success.
