Three arrested in Shariatpur after husband bound and wife gang-raped

Police in Shariatpur have arrested three men following the brutal gang rape of a woman in Naria upazila, an incident that has shocked the local community. Authorities rescued the victim early Tuesday morning after villagers alerted emergency services, and she is currently receiving medical care at the Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.

The incident unfolded late Monday night when a group of men, known to the victim’s husband, lured him from his home. According to local police, the perpetrators transported the man to a remote area, where they bound him to a tree. The assailants then forced the husband to contact his wife and demand she bring cash and jewelry to the site.

Upon her arrival at approximately 11:30 p.m., the victim discovered her husband being held captive. She reported that two of the men dragged her behind a nearby tree, forcibly silenced her, and proceeded to rape her despite her pleas for mercy. The suspects were interrupted when local residents, alerted by the victim’s cries, arrived at the scene and contacted the national emergency helpline, 999.

Naria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bahar Mia confirmed that the three suspects—identified as 28-year-old Rabbi, 42-year-old Hazrat Ali Khandaker, and 26-year-old ইমন Khandaker—were apprehended during a swift operation Tuesday morning. While the investigation remains ongoing, preliminary reports suggest that the kidnapping and assault may be linked to an ongoing dispute between the husband and the perpetrators regarding the sale of illegal narcotics. Police have also taken the husband into protective custody for further questioning.

At Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, Resident Medical Officer Mitu Akhter confirmed that the victim is being treated in the surgery ward. Medical staff have collected DNA samples and other forensic evidence to assist in the criminal investigation.

Speaking from her hospital bed, the victim recounted the harrowing experience, describing how she pleaded with her attackers before being violated. As legal proceedings move forward, investigators are working to finalize the formal case against the detainees, who remain in police custody.
