The campus of Chittagong University transformed into a vibrant hub of football fervor this Sunday, as hundreds of students gathered at the Shahid Minar premises to witness the World Cup action on a massive LED screen. The atmosphere reached a fever pitch during Argentina’s 3-1 victory, with the crowd erupting in deafening chants for Lionel Messi the moment he entered the pitch and subsequently found the back of the net.

Organized by the university’s branch of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal with support from State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Mohammad Mir Helal Uddin, the event featured a 200-square-foot screen. Organizers have committed to broadcasting every match from the Round of 32 through the final, turning the open space into a collective stadium for the student body.

For many students, the communal viewing experience has become the defining memory of their academic lives. Sajidul Hasan, a second-year economics student and lifelong Argentina supporter, noted that watching matches with friends has amplified the joy of the tournament, transforming the early morning kickoff into a celebratory event preceded by night-long gatherings.

While the Argentine faithful dominated the vocal output, the event also drew fans of other nations, including Brazil supporters who arrived to cheer for the opposition. Despite the competitive banter, the spirit remained festive. Following the final whistle, the excitement spilled over into a performance-based celebration as students from the university’s dance club staged a flash mob, an initiative that organizers described as a unique effort to foster campus unity and spirit.

The event, led by performing arts student Jannatul Ferdous, marked a departure from previous campus traditions. University authorities have taken proactive steps to ensure the security of the gathering. Proctor Hossain Shahid Sarwardy stated that the administration has implemented heightened security measures to monitor the enthusiastic crowds and prevent any untoward incidents as the tournament progresses.
