“There is no chance of bringing home a handful of rice”

Farmer Nazrul Islam of Sonatala village of Goalnagar union of Nasirnagar upazila of Brahmanbaria. He planted boro on five bigha land in Jhamarbali Dakshin Char Haor adjacent to the village. Nazrul fell unconscious in the field after seeing the crops falling in front of his eyes.
Apart from Nazrul, Ahad Mia (55) of nearby Rampura village saw the land sinking while cutting paddy with laborers yesterday morning. Unable to bear the pain, his heart stopped and he collapsed on the ground. After being taken to the hospital, the doctor declared him dead.

The crops of thousands of farmers in Nasirnagar upazila like Nazrul-Ahad have been submerged in water due to continuous rain for several days. According to the Agriculture Department, about 300 hectares of paddy land in Nasirnagar upazila is under water due to heavy rains. 800 to 1000 farmers have been affected. However, although the upazila agriculture office lists the affected farmers, there is no name of any farmer in Goalnagar union. According to the agriculture officer, it was not possible to reach all the areas as the list of affected farmers was ordered within two hours. Later the affected farmers of that union will be added to the list.
Farmer Nazrul Islam said, “My land is on the banks of the Ganges (river). I have taken four or five munis (labourers). Seeing water on the land, they left. I fell unconscious after seeing the land under water in front of my eyes. The whole house is under water. There is no chance of bringing home a handful of rice. I am putting the paddy straw on the fodder, the wetness has been washed away by the rain.

According to the office of the Upazila Agriculture Officer, rice has been cultivated on a total of 17 thousand 982 hectares of land in Nasirnagar. A total of 55 thousand farmers cultivated paddy. Last Thursday between 12 noon and 2 pm, the Ministry of Agriculture issued an order to prepare and send a list of affected farmers. The upazila agriculture officer has sent the list with names of 200 affected farmers. However, the names of all affected farmers are not included in the list.
Farmers of Goalnagar Union said that there are Sonatala, Guruhaja, Katlapur, Daliabil, Setari, Madhyakanda, Purakanda, Nelikhya, Khari, Jhamarbali, Khaser Char, Balachar, Bander Bill, Dakshin Char and Kadamtali Bill or Haor. About 1,500 bigha land of about 300 farmers in Sonatala, about 1,000 bigha land of more than 100 farmers in Jhamarbali and 1 to 1,500 bigha land of 200 to 300 farmers in Kadamtali have been submerged in rain water.
Sonatala farmer Murad Mia said, “What is the problem?” Rain and cold wind. Two fields of paddy are under water for eight days. Maya feels, so I have come to cut rice. If you can eat it dry, eat it, if not, slice it. I am a small farmer, who is a big farmer, more and more of his land has gone under water.’
Khalil Mia, a farmer of Goalnagar village, said, “I am cultivating paddy on 10 kani (one kani in 30th century) land. I am keeping the paddy of two kani land to dry. That paddy has also turned blue. The paddy kept in the field is also getting wet and rotting in the rain. The paddy fields of the remaining eight mines are submerged under water. A handful of water on the rice. This rice can no longer be picked.
On Saturday, some of the farmers went to Sonatula village of Goalnagar Union by boat from Bholakut of Nasirnagar and some of the farmers fell into the shallow water and some of the workers fell into the waist water to harvest paddy. Nasirnagar Upazila Agriculture Officer Imran Hossain told Prothom Alo that 300 hectares of upazila land is currently under water due to rain. 800 to 1000 farmers will be affected. Directed to give list of affected farmers within two hours on Thursday afternoon. As far as he could remove, he sent a list. Could not reach all places including Goalnagar due to lack of time. However, as stated at the time of submission, the list is incomplete. List of affected farmers is under process. An application will be made to the Ministry of Relief seeking allocation for them.
