Sometimes as an agricultural laborer, sometimes by driving a van, Abdul Quader makes a living. He is the only earning person in the family of four people. With what he earns, he has to struggle to run a family of four people in this time of rising commodity prices.
Abdul Quader’s house is in Hariyagachi village of Naogaon Sadar Upazila. When we spoke to him in the Bill area of Dighli of Naogaon Sadar Upazila around 11:30 on Wednesday, he was sitting on the side of the road with a sickle in his hand. When asked, he said, “Hamag’s team is cutting paddy in the bill.” Two more workers are coming. They don’t know the land. They need to be taken away. That’s why I’m sitting on the road.
He could not say exactly how old Abdul Quader is. When asked, he said, ‘Age will be 52-55. I remember the war time well. He was six-seven years old at that time. His words suggest that he may be 58-60 at present.
Abdul Quader said that his family consists of his wife Julekha Khatun and four daughters. Two elder daughters are married. The younger two daughters are marriageable but have not been able to get married yet. Due to financial constraints, primary education of girls is stopped. He said, “We are children of poor families. I have grown up in poverty since childhood. Our sons are also able to visit the school balcony. We didn’t even get that chance. Zamijma is nothing more than a pile of soil and a tin shed house. From the age of 12-13 years, I worked as a day laborer with my father. I am still in my father’s profession. When there is no farming in the area, I drive the van.’
Abdul Quader said that running a family in this market is becoming difficult day by day with the income earned by working as a daily laborer in agriculture and driving a van. He said, ‘Agriculture earns 600-700 rupees a day. And if you drive a van, one day you will earn three hundred taka, maybe one day a thousand taka. The price of goods, the income that is earned, is after some kind of consumption. No savings. There is no way to earn the money that will be spent on marrying a girl. Meanwhile, two girls are passing the age of beer. Beer house comes but seeing Hama’s condition that house leaves. Who will you marry the child of the poor house?’
Abdul Quader also said, “I have some kind of food and drink with whatever income I get.” It is not enough to live on a single person’s income. is old Back pain from lifting (carrying) heavy objects. Sometimes I can’t work due to back pain. Meanwhile, respiratory disease has also occurred. Year-round medicine for respiratory problems. A person earns six to seven hundred rupees a day. After paying all the expenses of the family with this money, there is no money to buy medicine for myself. Meanwhile, take the medicine even if you don’t take it. If you don’t take medicine, your body won’t move, your posture will deteriorate. As long as the body is good, the family will continue.
