Bengali youth Muhibur Rahman (23) went to Russia for higher studies with the desire to remove poverty and put a smile on the face of the family. The day was going well. At one point, he returned to the country and got married. Later he went to Russia and joined the country’s army. Everything was going well. There was contact with all the family.

One day there was a break in communication. I haven’t talked to anyone for a long time. Last Friday, one of Muhibur’s colleagues called and told his relatives that he lost his life in the Russia-Ukraine war in Ukraine. Suddenly, instead of light coming to the whole family, clouds have accumulated. Muhibur Rahman is the son of Masud Mia of Sammadpur village of Amoil Union of Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila.

After going to Sammadpur this Wednesday morning, there was a depression in the whole village. Entering the village, a man was seen coming along the dirt road with a spade on his shoulder. Face to face, when Masood asked where Mia’s house was, he stopped a bit—as if a cloud had descended on his face. Then he said, ‘I am Masud Mia. Go home.’

Masud Mia said, he has three sons and two daughters. Two daughters are married. Among the boys, Muhibur is the eldest. The family was the center of all hopes and aspirations. He was sobbing repeatedly as he spoke, unable to articulate much. At one point, he called his other son Habib from inside the house.

Talking to relatives, it was learned that after passing HSC from Moulvibazar Government College, Muhibur went to Russia with a study visa at the end of 2023. The family was in regular contact with him then. He returned to the country in November 2025 and stayed for about a month. Got married and went back to Russia in December. Later joined the Russian army. He was in regular contact with the family for a few days after that. Then suddenly the communication was lost.

Muhibur’s younger brother Habib showed a copy of Muhibur’s appointment letter in Russian. He said, before joining the Russian army, the brother did not tell anyone in the family. Later said. He also said that there is no opportunity to get out of the army if he wants to. He is said to be a cook. Later he was sent to the battlefield. On January 8 this year, Muhibur was last seen with the family. Later, the Russian Embassy in Dhaka was contacted to know the location of Muhibur. They said they had no such information.

Md. Habib told Prothom Alo that on April 17, a person from Russia called and informed Muhibur’s colleague that Muhibur had died in a drone attack in Kiev. The next day on April 18, the family members spoke to the man. Since then it is no longer possible to communicate. They think the man may have gone offline. The person also said that another colleague of Muhibur was injured in the same attack.

In the petition, arrangements have been made to bring the brother’s body to the country and take necessary measures to collect compensation. The Russian Embassy was contacted on Tuesday. However, the embassy has informed that they have not received news of the death of such a person, Pele will inform.

UNO Md. Rajib Hossain told Prothom Alo, “We do not know anything officially yet. His family has been notified of his death. We are sending a letter to the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare. In case of death, the body will be brought back and the latest situation will be known.
