The body of a 16-year-old student, missing for 44 hours after disappearing in the Meghna River, was recovered by local fishermen in Narsingdi’s Raipura upazila on Monday morning. The discovery of Yasin Sarkar, a ninth-grade student from Dairerpar, marks the seventh child death by drowning in the region over the past five days.

The victim, son of Hannan Sarkar, had been visiting relatives in the Monipura area of Hairmara union since Friday. According to family members and local police, the teenager went to the Monipura riverbank on Saturday afternoon to swim with a group of friends. While attempting to reach a submerged wooden footbridge about 50 yards offshore, Sarkar was overcome by a powerful current and swept beneath the surface.

Witnesses to the incident alerted bystanders, sparking an immediate search operation involving local residents and family members. Fire service personnel from Raipura, later bolstered by a dive team from Bhairab, conducted search efforts throughout Saturday evening but failed to locate the boy. Relatives continued the search independently for the entirety of Sunday using several boats, yet were unable to recover the body until local fishermen discovered it snagged in their nets near the Monipura landing station on Monday morning.

Following the recovery, officers from the Raipura Police Station arrived at the family home to complete an inquest report. Sub-Inspector Md. Zakir Hossain confirmed that the family requested to forgo a post-mortem examination, leading authorities to release the body to the victim’s parents.
