Tensions rise at Jamalpur border as unidentified individual remains in no-mans land

Tensions flared at the Satannipara border in Jamalpur’s Bakshiganj upazila on Friday after an unidentified middle-aged man was spotted loitering on the zero line. The incident drew a crowd of concerned local residents who intercepted the man as he attempted to cross into Bangladeshi territory shortly after midday.

The presence of the man at the border sparked local anxiety, prompting responses from both the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Indian Border Security Force (BSF). While personnel from both agencies arrived at the site to assess the situation, they ultimately withdrew without removing the individual, leaving him stationed on the zero line as onlookers continued to gather.

Assistant Director Imam Hossain of the Jamalpur 35 BGB Battalion dismissed claims that the incident involved an attempted “push-in.” According to the BGB official, the man is a local resident suffering from mental health issues who had wandered toward the border area. Hossain stated that both border forces reached the scene, communicated with the man, and subsequently departed after determining that the situation did not constitute a formal border intrusion attempt.

The event follows a period of heightened sensitivity in the region. Local residents reported that similar tensions emerged earlier in the week, including an alleged attempt by the BSF to push individuals across the border near the Rahimpur frontier in Dewanganj on Tuesday night, which was thwarted by alert villagers and the BGB. Additionally, a man identified as Srishti Chandra Barman was handed over to his family on Thursday after being pushed across the Dhanuakamalpur border by the BSF.

Despite the gathering at the Satannipara zero line, BGB officials maintained that the border remains stable. Authorities confirmed that no illegal push-ins or major security incidents were recorded in the Jamalpur frontier area throughout the day, characterizing the current atmosphere as peaceful.
