Suspect Escapes Custody After Mob Attacks Police in Savar

Two police officers were assaulted and a suspect was forcibly freed by a mob in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, late Tuesday evening. The incident occurred in the Boktarpur area around 7:45 p.m. as officers attempted to execute an arrest warrant in a narcotics case.
The injured officers, Sub-Inspector (SI) S.M. Shamim and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Moshiur Rahman Khan of the Savar Model Police Station, were transported to the Savar Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Dr. Fardin Abdur Razzak, on duty at the hospital’s emergency department, confirmed that both officers sustained multiple injuries during the confrontation.

According to SI Shamim, the officers successfully located and apprehended the suspect, Rafiqul Islam, at approximately 7:30 p.m. However, as the officers attempted to secure him, the suspect and his associates launched an attack using bricks and sticks. The situation escalated rapidly as a crowd of 40 to 50 people joined the assailants, physically overwhelming the officers and allowing the suspect to escape custody.
A second police unit arrived shortly after the incident to rescue the injured officers, but the attackers had already dispersed.

Noor Mohammad, an inspector of investigations at the Savar Model Police Station, stated that law enforcement is actively working to identify the individuals involved in the assault. He confirmed that a formal case is being filed and that a manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the suspects and recapture the fugitive.
