St. Joseph students claim top prize at national innovation showcase with AI-driven healthcare system

Three students from St. Joseph Higher Secondary School have secured the top prize at a national innovation showcase with their “AI-Controlled Robotic Automation in Healthcare” project. Developed under the guidance of two faculty members, the system utilizes affordable, AI-driven technology to create a comprehensive rehabilitation ecosystem. The project features an ESP32-integrated stroke rehabilitation glove and a voice-and-gesture-controlled bionic arm, designed to make therapeutic care more accessible and efficient.
The smart glove transmits exercise data to a centralized web platform, allowing physicians to monitor a patient’s progress remotely and adjust therapy parameters without requiring frequent clinic visits. Complementing this, the bionic arm employs machine learning to adapt to the patient’s natural movements, facilitating personalized support within the home environment. The developers believe this integration of IoT and adaptive robotics will reduce hospital dependency and lower the costs associated with long-term rehabilitation.
The innovation was recognized at the national level during the “Startup, Science Project and Innovation Idea Showcasing Program,” a multi-stage competition held by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education. The initiative saw participation from across the country, with ten student teams receiving awards for their contributions to science and entrepreneurship. Each winning student was awarded 20,000 taka, while their supervising teachers received 30,000 taka and certificates.
The awards were presented by Prime Minister Tareq Rahman at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center on Monday. During the ceremony, the Prime Minister emphasized the role of youth in shaping the country’s future, stating that the government’s initiatives are centered on equipping the next generation to drive national development.
Other notable winners included Meherpur’s Sandhani School and College, which placed second with a “Smart Waste Management and Monitoring System,” and Dinajpur Government College, which earned third place for “NeuroSign,” an interface that translates hand gestures into sign language and vice-versa. Parbatipur Cantonment Public School and College took fourth place for their “NextGen Agriculture” project, followed by six other schools from across the country completing the top ten.
The competition, organized under the Education Ministry’s Educational Excellence Support Scheme, spanned three tiers: upazila, district, and national. The process began in June with over 27,000 students from 521 upazilas, eventually narrowing down to 101 teams that competed in the national final.
Preceding the award ceremony, Prime Minister Rahman inaugurated the “One Child, One Tree” program, which saw the simultaneous planting of fruit-bearing, timber, and medicinal trees at nearly 30,000 secondary schools nationwide. The event concluded with cultural performances by the participating students, marking the end of a nationwide showcase intended to foster scientific inquiry and entrepreneurial spirit among the nation’s youth.
