Jahangirnagar University Hall Administration Issues Show-Cause Notices Over Religious Flag Display

Jahangirnagar University authorities have issued show-cause notices to four students residing in the Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall following the display of a flag inscribed with the Kalima on their dormitory balcony. The notices, signed by hall warden and investigation committee convener Professor Mir Feroz Hossain, were delivered on Thursday, mandating that the students provide a formal written explanation by July 5.

The disciplinary action stems from an incident on June 27, when the flag was spotted hanging from the balcony of room 302 in the hall’s ‘A’ block. The flag, featuring the Islamic declaration of faith on white fabric, drew immediate scrutiny after images surfaced on social media, where some users compared it to symbols associated with the Taliban. This online discourse triggered a backlash among the general student body, prompting the hall administration to investigate the incident.

The students identified in the administrative notice include Arif Hasnat, a member of the 53rd batch of the Chemistry department; Md. Rakib, a 50th-batch student of Public Administration; Md. Giasuddin, a 52nd-batch Chemistry student; and Sad Abdur Rahman, a 55th-batch Computer Science and Engineering student. While the first three are residents of the room, reports indicate that Rahman has not yet moved into the dormitory.

Speaking to local media, student Md. Rakib explained that the flag had been hung by one of his junior roommates as a display of religious sentiment, drawing a parallel to the common practice of students flying national flags during sporting events. Rakib stated that he removed the flag immediately after realizing the controversy it had generated on social media. He also noted that the inclusion of Rahman in the disciplinary notice was an administrative error, as the student has not yet occupied the room.

Professor Abdur Razzaq, the hall provost, stated that the administration initiated a formal investigation once the issue was brought to their attention via online platforms. He noted that given the sensitive nature of such symbols and the ongoing public debate surrounding their usage, the university deemed it necessary to conduct an inquiry to determine the intent and circumstances behind the display.
