Sixth Suspect Confesses to Murder of BNP Leader in Dhaka

A suspect in the murder of BNP leader Abul Bashar has provided a formal confession before a Dhaka court, marking the sixth individual to admit involvement in the killing. Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam recorded the statement of the suspect, identified as Parvez, before ordering him to be sent to jail.
The development follows the arrest of Parvez by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Kishoreganj early Sunday. According to the prosecution, Sub-Inspector Hafizur Rahman of Adabor Police Station, who is leading the investigation, presented the suspect to the court on Monday to facilitate the confession.

The case stems from a violent confrontation in the Nobodoy Housing area of Adabor on July 1. Investigators report that tensions between rival factions led by Majnu and Shahid began on June 29, sparked by a dispute over a World Cup football match between Japan and Brazil. While a mediation meeting was attempted on the evening of July 1 to resolve the ongoing friction, the discussion devolved into a clash.
Witnesses and court documents state that when Abul Bashar attempted to intervene and stabilize the situation, he was attacked with sharp weapons. Another individual, Saddam Hossain, was also critically injured during the altercation. Both were initially transported to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, but Bashar was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to the severity of his injuries, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim’s wife, Smriti Akter, filed a murder case at the Adabor Police Station three days after the incident. The complaint alleges that the dispute was initially ignited by the celebration of a Brazilian victory, specifically involving the use of whistles. Following the failed mediation, the suspects reportedly laid an ambush near a local intersection, leading to the lethal attack on Bashar and the wounding of Saddam, who remains under medical care.
