Saudi expatriate dies in Dhaka hotel room following meeting with social media contact

A 40-year-old expatriate returning from Saudi Arabia died under mysterious circumstances at a residential hotel in Dhaka’s Gulistan area on Friday morning. The victim, identified as Md. Al Amin, was declared dead by physicians at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) emergency department after being rushed from Hotel Ramna in an unconscious state at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Al Amin, a resident of Kaliganj in Gazipur, had arrived in Bangladesh on June 13. According to police and family statements, the victim had checked into the hotel accompanied by a woman he introduced as his wife. Investigations later revealed that the woman is a nursing student from Bagerhat who had maintained a relationship with Al Amin through Facebook while he was working abroad.

The woman told authorities that she traveled to Dhaka to meet Al Amin and collect gifts he had brought back from Saudi Arabia. After arriving at the hotel, the pair checked into a ninth-floor room. She reported that shortly after their arrival, Al Amin entered the restroom, where she heard a loud thud moments later. Upon discovering him unresponsive on the floor, she alerted hotel staff, who assisted in transporting him to the hospital.
Deputy Commissioner of the Motijheel Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, stated that the victim’s body has been transferred to the DMCH morgue for an autopsy. Authorities noted that a formal inquest report is being prepared to determine the precise cause of death.

The victim’s younger brother, Ruhul Amin, stated that the family had been informed that his brother died after collapsing in the hotel restroom while in the city to manage business involving goods he had brought from abroad. Police officials confirmed that legal proceedings are underway, and investigators are awaiting the forensic report to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.
