Bangladeshi students develop vehicle camera streaming system to reduce highway overtaking accidents

A group of secondary school students in Dinajpur’s Birampur upazila has unveiled a technological solution aimed at curbing road accidents caused by dangerous overtaking. The innovation, dubbed the “Vehicle Front Camera Streaming System” (VFCSS), allows drivers of trailing vehicles to view real-time footage from the front of the vehicle ahead of them, providing a clear perspective of oncoming traffic before attempting to pass.

The project was presented during a “Startup, Science Project and Innovation Idea Showcasing Program” held at the Birampur Upazila Parishad auditorium on Friday. The event, which highlighted student-led innovations, was inaugurated by Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain and presided over by Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanjina Khatun.

Developed by tenth-grade science students from Birampur Adarsha High School, the system utilizes an ESP-32 camera mounted on the front of a vehicle. According to student innovator Sinha Tanjim, the device converts visual data into binary code, which is then processed by a central data manager. An ESP-32 S3 system on a motherboard acts as an antenna to distribute this data via a local Wi-Fi signal. This stream is transmitted to a display unit installed in the trailing vehicle, allowing the driver to monitor the road ahead. By confirming the absence of oncoming vehicles, drivers can execute overtaking maneuvers with significantly reduced risk.

While the project has been lauded at the local level for its potential to save lives and streamline traffic flow, the students acknowledged that substantial hurdles remain. Implementation would require formal government authorization and significant financial investment to transition from a prototype to a standardized safety feature on national highways.

The students’ efforts have drawn praise from local education officials, with Birampur Upazila Secondary Education Officer Shamsher Ali Mondal confirming that the project earned top honors at the upazila showcase. The team is now preparing to represent their district at a regional competition. Moinul Islam, an assistant teacher at Birampur Adarsha High School, commended the students’ commitment, expressing confidence that with proper institutional support, the technology could eventually make a meaningful contribution to national road safety.
