“Remember, you have a country, you have a responsibility towards the country”
“I would request you, when you grow up, when you go into any profession – be it doctor, engineer or any profession – always remember that you have a country. You have a responsibility towards this country.
The words were spoken by the brave freedom fighter Colonel (Retd.) Taufiqur Rahman. He said this to the students who participated in the ‘First Alo-Bandhu Sabha Liberation Olympiad 2026’ organized at Milestone School and College in Uttara of the capital on Monday.
Bandhu Sabha Liberation War Olympiad 2026 was held in different parts of the country to spread the history, spirit and values of the Liberation War among the new generation. Dhaka phase is held at Milestone School and College. The Olympiad was organized by the members of Prothom Alo Bandhu Sabha under the slogan ‘Awakened youth in the light of freedom struggle’.
In this event, the brave freedom fighter Colonel (Retd.) Taufiqur Rahman commemorated the terrible days of the great liberation war of 1971. Recalling the torture and heinous crimes committed by the Pakistani forces on women, this brave freedom fighter said, “The only job of a Razakar named Gama was to inform the Pakistani forces about which houses had girls.” Then brutal torture was carried out.
Colonel (Retd.) Taufiqur Rahman recounted a heart-wrenching story while reminiscing about seeing a mad woman on the battlefield. Describing the situation of the woman who was tortured and locked up in the bunker, he said, “Because of the torture, the woman could not understand anything.” Only the one who slept in the room recognized the room.
Colonel (retd) Taufiqur Rahman commemorated the martyrdom of the young freedom fighter Golam Dastgir Tito in the battlefield. Apart from this, he brought to the attention of the new generation the brutality of the invading forces and the valor of the brave freedom fighters in different parts of the country including the capital.
Prothom Alo managing editor and fiction writer Anisul Haque highlighted the importance of patriotism and enlightenment to the students of the present generation. He said, “The greenery of this country, the wind of this country, the rain of this country, the sunshine of this country – nowhere else in the world is this magical.”
Recalling the history of 3 million martyrs of the Great War of Liberation, Anisul Haque said, “Love this country.” gain knowledge Because, if you are wise, if you are skilled, then you can benefit your family, society and state.’
Regarding the respect and history of the brave freedom fighters, the principal of Milestone College Mohammad Ziaul Alam said, “We got an independent country because of the sacrifice and spirit of the freedom fighters. The young generation should deeply know and understand the history and ideals of the Liberation War.
Mohammad Ziaul Alam said that despite getting the territory and flag in the great liberation war, we could not achieve complete economic independence. He said, “Economically, we are still dependent on foreign powers. The main responsibility of completing this deficiency and making the country economically self-reliant is on the current generation.
The Executive President of Bandhu Sabha National Council Farhad Hossain Mallik said to the students that it is a platform to sharpen patriotism, volunteerism and writing for all the friends of Bandhu Sabha spread across the country and abroad. They regularly conduct humanitarian activities like lesson cycles, tree plantation, good deed competitions and sharing the joy of Eid with the poor. He urged the students who participated in the competition to join the friendship.
At the event, actor Tausif Mahbub highlighted the importance of patriotism, smartphone addiction and honesty to the students. He said, “Constant efforts and honesty should be given more importance than institutional results in the process of self-development.”
The actor expressed respect and deep gratitude to the brave freedom fighters and said, ‘So that we never forget those who fought for us. Only then we will become Bangladesh.
Ashfakuzzaman, Secretary of Liberation War and Research Affairs of Bandhu Sabha National Executive, Mohammad Shafayet Uddin, teacher of Milestone College also spoke on the occasion. Zafar Sadiq, president of Bandhu Sabha National Council, moderated.
Earlier, the ‘Liberation War Olympiad’ started around 9:30 am. In addition to the students of Milestone School and College, 500 students from various educational institutions of Dhaka participated through online registration.

They are Milestone School and College students Mustaqeem Mahfuz (first), Tanveer Ahmed (second), Latifur Rahman (third), Arisha Tahnia (fourth), Ajay Sutradhar (fifth), Sajid Al Maheed (sixth), Mahamudul Hasan (seventh), Abid Hasan (eighth), Atia Mahmuda (ninth) and Sherebangla Nagar Government Girls. High school student Sadia Jahan (X). Two others were awarded in the impromptu quiz.
