Police suspect murder after woman found dead in Dhakas Vatara; husband missing

Police in Dhaka have launched an investigation into the suspected homicide of a 25-year-old woman whose body was discovered at her rented home in the capital’s Solmaid area on Friday evening. The victim, identified as Purnima Akter, was found on a bed by officers from the Bhatara Police Station after they received a report via the national emergency service, 999.

Sub-Inspector Yaur Rahman, who conducted the preliminary inquest, noted visible signs of foul play, including swelling on the left side of the victim’s head and distinct finger marks on her throat. While authorities believe the primary cause of death was strangulation, they have referred the body to the Dhaka Medical College morgue to await a formal autopsy report to confirm the exact circumstances of her death.

Investigators have identified the victim’s husband, a construction worker named Swapan, as a person of interest in the case. Swapan has been missing since the incident occurred, and police are currently working to determine his whereabouts.

According to police records, Purnima, originally from the Muktagachha upazila of Mymensingh, had married Swapan following her divorce from a previous partner. She leaves behind a young daughter who remains in the care of her grandparents in their native village. Preliminary inquiries have revealed that the couple’s household was marred by ongoing marital disputes, further complicated by the fact that Swapan had another wife. Authorities stated that they are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the incident.
