Police recover body of Syrian-Bangladeshi dual citizen in Patuakhali

Police in Patuakhali recovered the body of a 73-year-old Syrian-Bangladeshi dual citizen from his rented residence in the Nawabpara area on Friday night. The deceased, identified as Mazen Al Khatib, had been living alone in the ground-floor apartment for approximately four months.

Local authorities were alerted after the victim’s sister-in-law, Tania Akter, arrived at the home to deliver dinner and received no response to her repeated calls. After being notified by the landlord, K.M. Shahadat Hossain, officers from the Patuakhali Sadar Police Station forced entry into the premises and discovered the body.

According to his family, Al Khatib had traveled to Bangladesh in November and eventually settled in Patuakhali, where he operated a private clinic. His son, 43-year-old Hassan Al Khatib, arrived in the city following the incident but stated that the family had not been residing with him, leaving the circumstances surrounding the death unclear.

Patuakhali Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Moniruzzaman confirmed that the body has been transferred to a local morgue for an autopsy. He stated that police are currently investigating the matter and will initiate further legal proceedings based on the findings of the post-mortem examination.
