Police recover bodies of couple from Chittagong hotel room

Police in the Bangladeshi port city of Chattogram recovered the bodies of a married couple from a room at the Royal Park residential hotel in the Foy’s Lake area on Monday morning. The deceased were identified as 47-year-old Mohammad Ripon and his 30-year-old wife, Sonia Akter, both of whom were residents of the city’s Kotwali area.
Authorities discovered Ripon’s body hanging from a ceiling fan, while his wife’s body was found lying on the bed. Hotel staff reported that the couple checked into the fourth-floor room on Sunday afternoon. According to hotel management, an employee last interacted with the pair at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Sunday when he delivered water, at which point the couple requested a wake-up call for 7:00 a.m. the following morning.

When the employee arrived to fulfill the request, he found the room door left open. He discovered the couple unresponsive, noting that there was visible foam near Sonia’s mouth.
Local police officials indicated that this was a second marriage for both individuals and noted that the couple had been struggling with various family issues. While investigators are exploring the possibility of a joint suicide, the fact that the door was left open has prompted authorities to conduct a more thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Akbar Shah Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamruzzaman confirmed that the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has collected evidence from the scene. Investigators have secured CCTV footage from the hotel, though they noted that the fourth floor where the incident occurred lacks camera coverage. The bodies have been transferred to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies, which officials expect will provide definitive clarity regarding the cause of death.
