Police in Jashore’s Bagharpara upazila arrested Hassan Ali, a 74-year-old freedom fighter and local political figure, during a late-night operation at his residence in Malinchi village. Officers took the former Awami League official into custody at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, subsequently transferring him to court on Thursday morning.

Hassan Ali, who previously served as the joint general secretary of the now-restricted Bagharpara unit of the Awami League, was most recently identified by local authorities as the general secretary of the party’s local branch. While the Jashore district committee had approved this leadership structure, the party’s central committee had suspended the appointment. Beyond his political activities, Ali is a decorated veteran who once served as the Bagharpara upazila commander for freedom fighters.

According to his eldest son, Enamul Kabir, officers arrived at their home shortly after 1:00 a.m., shaking the collapsible gates of the residence until his father emerged to meet them. Kabir maintained that his father had no prior history of criminal charges or active legal cases against him.

Shahjalal Alam, the officer-in-charge of Bagharpara Police Station, confirmed the arrest but noted that the detention was linked to an existing case involving allegations of sabotage. While officials have officially charged Ali under this case, the police acknowledged that his name did not originally appear in the initial First Information Report (FIR) filed regarding the incident.
