Actor Zaher Alvi Granted Two-Day Remand in Wife’s Suicide Abetment Case

A Dhaka metropolitan court has granted a two-day remand for television actor Zaher Alvi, known professionally as Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, in connection with a case filed over the death of his wife, Afra Ibnath Khan Ikra. Metropolitan Magistrate Al-Biruni Mir issued the order on Wednesday following a hearing, according to public prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid.
The remand proceedings stem from a case filed at Pallabi Police Station, where investigators had initially sought a 10-day detention to interrogate the actor. Inspector Md. Abdul Malek of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police requested the custody, alleging that Alvi subjected his wife to persistent emotional abuse and public humiliation. Court documents indicate that investigators believe the actor’s behavior, including derogatory social media posts, contributed to Ikra’s death.

According to the case file, Ikra was found hanging in her residence in the Mirpur DOHS area on February 28. Despite being rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, she was declared dead upon arrival. At the time of the incident, Alvi was reportedly traveling in Nepal. Following her death, Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, filed a complaint alleging that his daughter was driven to suicide due to prolonged domestic conflict and physical and mental harassment.
During Wednesday’s hearing, Alvi maintained his innocence, telling the court that he remained in a state of shock over the loss. He described his marriage as a relationship characterized by the typical ups and downs of a couple who had wed for love, asserting that no circumstances existed that would have compelled his wife to take her own life.

The actor had previously surrendered to a Dhaka court on June 18, seeking bail, which was denied. He has been in custody since that time. His mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuli, was also named in the case but was granted bail after surrendering to the court earlier in June. The couple, who were married in 2010, share one son.
