Six new instructors have been appointed to Cumilla Government Women’s College, a decision coming days after a controversial mass transfer of seven faculty members from the same institution. The Ministry of Education’s secondary and higher education division issued the notification on Sunday, mandating that the newly appointed staff report to the college by July 28.

The administrative shifts follow a public outcry sparked by an incident on July 13, when roughly 1,000 Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinees were forced to wade through waist-deep water to reach the college campus during severe flooding. Ten days later, the government transferred seven teachers from the college to various districts, including Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet, Noakhali, Lakshmipur, and Barguna.

The transfers triggered widespread criticism and student-led protests. On Saturday, students gathered on campus to demonstrate against the administrative action, arguing that the educators were being unfairly scapegoated for persistent urban waterlogging issues that remain beyond their control. During the protest, a video of Mohammad Mohsin, an associate professor of English, becoming visibly emotional while urging students to cease their demonstration circulated widely on social media, further fueling public discourse.

The rapid appointment of replacement teachers has deepened tensions, with both the previously transferred staff and the student body expressing dissatisfaction. An affected teacher, speaking on condition of anonymity to Prothom Alo, described the quick transition as a failure to reconsider the initial transfers, labeling the assignment of blame to faculty members as unjust.

Students involved in the protest remain firm in their opposition to the ministry’s handling of the situation. Salma Akter, a student who participated in the demonstrations, criticized the decision to proceed with new appointments without retracting the transfer orders for the incumbent faculty. She indicated that the student body is currently in discussions to determine their next course of action, maintaining that the government’s focus should remain on resolving the city’s long-standing infrastructure challenges rather than penalizing college personnel.
