Dhaka University professor Mahbub Ullah appointed National Professor

The Bangladeshi government has appointed Mahbub Ullah, a former professor at the University of Dhaka, as a National Professor for a five-year term. The appointment was confirmed on Monday through an official notification issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education.

Under the terms of his appointment, Professor Mahbub Ullah will not hold the status of a government official. He is tasked with conducting independent research in his chosen field while maintaining an affiliation with an academic institution or research organization of his preference. He is required to formally notify both the Secondary and Higher Education Division and the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the specific focus of his research endeavors.

Accountability measures have been established to track the progress of his scholarship. Professor Mahbub Ullah will submit annual progress reports to his affiliated organization, which in turn will update the chairman of the UGC on the status of his work. Furthermore, the findings and results of his research must be formally submitted to both the education ministry and the UGC.

Throughout his tenure, Professor Mahbub Ullah will receive salary and benefits equivalent to Grade-1 of the National Pay Scale 2015, which includes a fixed basic salary of 78,000 taka alongside additional allowances. During this five-year appointment, he is prohibited from holding any other salaried position.
