Police arrest two over alleged bribery attempt of officer in Kulaura

Police in Bangladesh arrested a man and a woman for attempting to bribe a police officer to prevent the woman’s husband from traveling abroad. The incident occurred on Thursday at the Kulaura police station in Moulvibazar district.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Moinul Islam Chowdhury, also known as Samad, 32, and Jasmine Akhtar, 37, the wife of a Saudi-bound expatriate named Mahtab Uddin. Both hail from the Rautgaon Union of the Upazila.

According to police and case details, Jasmine Akhtar has been experiencing long-standing marital disputes with her husband, Mahtab Uddin, and they are currently living separately. As Mahtab was preparing to return to Saudi Arabia, Jasmine, accompanied by Moinul Islam, went to the Kulaura police station on Thursday afternoon. Their intention was to prevent his departure.

At the time of their visit, the police station was under inspection by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Sylhet Range, with the Superintendent of Police of Moulvibazar also present. Moinul and Jasmine approached Sub-Inspector (SI) Forhad Matabbar to discuss Mahtab’s travel plans. During this conversation, Moinul presented the SI with an envelope. Upon opening it, the officer discovered Tk 40,000 ($375 USD approx.) inside.

Acting on orders from senior officials, the money was seized, and both individuals were detained. Later that night, SI Forhad Matabbar filed a case against Moinul Islam and Jasmine Akhtar. The case dossier states that the bribe was an attempt to influence a public servant in the execution of their official duties.
