Detectives have arrested another individual in connection with the attack and vandalism of a vehicle belonging to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker Md. Aynul Haq in the Sirajganj-3 constituency.
The suspect, Md. Golam Muktadir, serves as the member secretary of the municipal unit of the Swechchhasebak Dal and is also the general secretary of the Raiganj Press Club.
Officer-in-Charge of Raiganj Police Station, Md. Ahsanuzzaman, confirmed the arrest on Monday morning. He stated that Muktadir was explicitly named in the First Information Report. The arrest was carried out by the Detective Branch of police during an operation late Sunday night.
In a separate development, local police arrested another suspect, Alamgir Hossain, during an operation in the Dhangora area of the upazila on Sunday afternoon.
The attack occurred last Saturday at approximately 6:00 p.m. as the lawmaker was departing from an exchange meeting in the Dhangora Bazar area. Following the incident, Shamimul Hasan Khandaker, vice president of the Chandaikona Union unit of the BNP, filed a case with the Raiganj police station late Saturday night. The case lists 15 named suspects and an additional 30 to 40 unidentified individuals.
Lawmaker Md. Aynul Haq has accused leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and the National Citizens Party (NCP) of orchestrating the assault. Both Jamaat-e-Islami and the NCP have denied the allegations and have called for an impartial investigation into the matter.
