Police arrest five former local political leaders in Ramganj over banned organization activities

RAMGANJ, Bangladesh — Police arrested five individuals, including a former ward councilor, in Ramganj on Friday night for their alleged involvement in activities linked to the now-prohibited Jubo League and Chhatra League organizations.
The detainees have been identified as Rashedul Hasan, 42, Morshedul Amin, 35, Parvez Hossain, 24, Faisal Hossain, 31, and Md. Murad, 24. Rashedul Hasan previously served as a councilor for Ward No. 3 of the Ramganj Municipality and held the position of joint convener for the municipal branch of the Jubo League. Morshedul Amin is a former president of the Ramganj Government College unit of the Chhatra League.
The arrests followed a food distribution event held Friday afternoon to mark the death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. According to local police, the group gathered at the Ramganj Shishu Park area, where they distributed food to children and women before vacating the site. A video documenting the event subsequently circulated on social media, prompting authorities to launch a search operation later that night.
Mohammad Firoz Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Ramganj Police Station, confirmed that the five men were apprehended shortly after the video surfaced. Authorities stated that the suspects were already named in existing cases filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. Following their arrest, the five individuals were presented in court on Saturday.
