Three People Assaulted Near Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Residence in Dhanmondi 32

DHANMONDI, DHAKA — Three individuals were assaulted near the site of the former residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi Road 32 on Saturday, following allegations of chanting political slogans, recording videos, and distributing food. Police have detained two individuals in connection with the unrest.
The incidents occurred around midday as a group identifying themselves as “July Warriors,” led by ANM Ayas, intercepted several people near the barricaded entrance of the location. Ayas, who identifies as the member secretary of the Rashtra Sanglap Forum, stated that his group is monitoring the area to prevent activities by members of the Awami League and its youth wing, Jubo League, both of which are currently prohibited from political activity.
Among those detained by police was Ornob Das, who was apprehended earlier in the morning while attempting to lay flowers at the site. According to Muhammad Imdadul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, Das is a resident of Tangail and is believed to be an active member of the Jubo League. He is currently being interrogated.
In a separate incident, a rickshaw driver was assaulted by the group after Ayas accused him of recording a video and sending it to a member of the Jubo League. The driver was subsequently taken into police custody. Another unidentified man was beaten after allegedly chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans, while a third individual was assaulted on accusations of distributing singaras, a local pastry, in commemoration of the anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s death. Both the unidentified individuals managed to flee the scene after being attacked.
When questioned regarding the propriety of vigilante tactics, Ayas denied forming a mob, asserting that their objective is merely to capture individuals linked to the banned organizations and hand them over to law enforcement. Ayas departed the scene following further inquiries from the press.
Saddam Hossain, Assistant Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for the Dhanmondi region, stated that law enforcement remains deployed in sufficient numbers to maintain order.
Security at the site has been tight since the early hours of the morning. Authorities have erected barricades on both sides of the road leading to the former residence, effectively halting all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. A significant police presence, including armored personnel carriers, remains stationed at the scene as members of the media and onlookers continue to gather in the vicinity.
