One Dead Following Clashes Over Regional Dominance in Rajbari

A territorial dispute between two villages in Rajbari’s Pangsha upazila escalated into a fatal clash, leaving one man dead and sparking a wave of retaliatory violence. Jamin Biswas, 55, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Dhaka on Sunday night, where he had been transferred after sustaining critical wounds during an altercation on Saturday.
The conflict originated last Thursday over a land survey dispute involving residents from the villages of Dori-Banglat and Dhepa-Majail. Tensions flared when Hakim Mondal and his associates from Dori-Banglat allegedly assaulted a resident of Dhepa-Majail, Motiur Biswas. Retaliatory measures were taken the following morning when members of the Dhepa-Majail community confronted Mondal and reportedly assaulted him.

On Sunday morning, the cycle of violence intensified when a group from Dori-Banglat attempted to raid a residence in Dhepa-Majail. Jamin Biswas, who intervened to protect the property, was attacked with sharp weapons. He was initially transported to Faridpur Medical College Hospital before being moved to Dhaka, where he died at approximately 8:00 p.m. Two other individuals wounded in the attack remain under medical care at the Pangsha Upazila Health Complex.
The news of Biswas’s death triggered immediate unrest in the area. According to Pangsha Model Police Station officer-in-charge Sheikh Moinul Islam, residents from Dhepa-Majail launched retaliatory attacks on Dori-Banglat village overnight. The violence resulted in the vandalism and burning of several homes, alongside reports of looting of household goods and livestock.

Local authorities confirmed that although police responded to the scene, significant tension persisted throughout the area on Monday morning. The investigation into the initial homicide and the subsequent acts of arson and looting is ongoing.
