Maradona death inquiry reopened

Diego Maradona’s death is once again the subject of a judicial review after a previous investigation was halted due to a judge’s controversial involvement in a documentary. The football legend died in November 2020, just weeks after being discharged from hospital following brain surgery and while receiving care at his home.

A seven-member medical team, including doctors, a psychiatrist, and nurses, faces allegations of negligence that led to the World Cup-winning captain’s death. Maradona’s family and numerous witnesses provided testimony during an initial investigation that began shortly after his passing.

However, that judicial process was suspended after two and a half months. The entire proceedings were ultimately dismissed in May 2025 due to ethical concerns surrounding a judge’s participation in a documentary related to the case.

The renewed investigation will hear testimony from approximately 120 witnesses. Prosecutors aim to establish whether the medical team’s alleged negligence was directly responsible for Maradona’s death. If found guilty, the accused face potential prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.
