Bangladesh government forces senior police official into retirement over misconduct allegations

The Bangladeshi government has mandated the compulsory retirement of Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Golam Saklain following allegations of professional misconduct. The order, confirmed by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Kazi Mohammad Saiful Islam, stems from investigations into Saklain’s conduct while he served as an Additional Deputy Commissioner with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch.

The government’s decision was precipitated by reports of an illicit intimate relationship between Saklain and actress Pori Moni. Official records indicate that the Ministry of Home Affairs concluded Saklain violated professional ethics by engaging in conduct incompatible with his duties as a senior law enforcement officer. The retirement order received formal approval following a procedural review by the Home Minister and subsequent clearance from the Office of the President.

The controversy originated in 2021 during the investigation into a high-profile incident at the Dhaka Boat Club, where Pori Moni alleged attempted rape and murder against businessman Nasir U. Mahmud. Saklain was initially assigned to oversee the investigation into the actress’s claims. However, his involvement was cut short after reports of his personal relationship with the complainant surfaced, leading to his immediate removal from the case and the formation of an internal disciplinary committee to investigate the breach of conduct.

In subsequent public remarks addressing the fallout, Pori Moni denied the claims of an illicit romantic entanglement. The actress characterized the disciplinary measures against Saklain as both unexpected and unjust, suggesting that the scrutiny may have been motivated by personal vendettas or attempts to undermine a successful officer. She maintained that the controversy was an external narrative rather than a reflection of their actual interactions.
