Nine Arrested in Chittagong Over Multi-Million Taka Extortion Plot and Internet Firm Attack

RAB officials have arrested nine individuals in connection with a violent attack on a Chittagong internet service provider, an assault allegedly orchestrated by a local crime figure to extort 20 million taka.
The suspects, led by Rohen Mia, targeted Digital Dot Net (DDN) in the city’s Bakalia Access Road area on July 13. According to authorities, the attack was ordered by Mobarak Hossain Emon, also known as David Emon, after the business owner refused to pay a 20 million taka one-time sum alongside a monthly protection fee of 1 million taka.

RAB-7 Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman detailed the operation during a press conference at the Chandgaon RAB camp on Sunday. He stated that the suspects, who were apprehended across various locations in the city and district throughout Saturday night, confessed to the scheme. Investigators noted that the group coordinated the attack in three distinct units, with one team acting as lookouts for law enforcement, another securing the perimeter, and a third group entering the building to conduct the destruction.
Evidence gathered from security camera footage was instrumental in the investigation. The recordings showed a group of roughly 20 armed men storming the DDN office, where they used axes and other improvised weapons to shatter computers, office equipment, and mobile phones. Beyond the damage, the perpetrators reportedly stole 3.5 million taka during the raid.

Among the nine arrested individuals are Rohen Mia, Md. Tuhin, Akbar Hossain, Md. Abdul Mumin, Md. Masud Mia, Md. Didar Mia, Md. Sanjat Hassan, Saikat Hossain, and Md. Saifuddin. Officers recovered four locally made weapons used in the assault during the arrests.
The case, initially filed with the Chawkbazar police station against unknown suspects, has now been bolstered by the confessions of the detainees. The nine men have been handed over to local police for further legal proceedings as authorities continue their search for Emon and any remaining fugitives involved in the extortion plot.
