New Rangpur Police Commissioner Pledges Swift Resolution to Quadruple Homicide Case

Newly appointed Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RPMP) Commissioner Md. Mahabubur Rashid pledged on Friday to expedite investigations into high-profile cases, ensuring that charge sheets are filed promptly to secure justice.
Commissioner Rashid made the commitment while visiting the crime scene in the Mashuapara area of the city, eight days after the murder of retired Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family. Rashid officially assumed his role as the head of the metropolitan police on Thursday.
Addressing the broader issue of narcotics, the commissioner stated that drug abuse is a national crisis rather than a localized concern. He announced that visible measures against illicit drug activities in Rangpur will be implemented within the next week. He further emphasized his commitment to collaborating with the public to transform Rangpur into a peaceful and secure city.
The commissioner was accompanied during his visit by senior law enforcement officials, including Additional Commissioner Naresh Chakma, Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Branch Sanatan Chakraborty, and Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station AKM Nazmul Kader.
The victims—65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 25-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty, and 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty—were killed inside their residence on the night of August 20. Their bodies were discovered on August 22 after relatives raised an alarm, prompting a police response. Forensic examinations confirmed that all four victims died from strangulation.
Following the discovery, the victim’s brother, Gopinath Chakraborty, filed a murder case against unidentified perpetrators at the Kotwali Police Station. Police subsequently arrested Mugdha Das, son of Kanu Das, and Siddhartha Das, son of Binay Das, both of whom are residents of the same area. Authorities reported that the suspects have confessed to the murders in court.
