MYMENSINGH HOSPITAL REPORTS TWO MORE CHILD MEASLES DEATHS

Mymensingh Medical College Hospital’s measles isolation ward reported the deaths of two more children with measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours, bringing the total fatalities from the ongoing outbreak to 22 since mid-March. The hospital simultaneously admitted 24 new pediatric patients during the same period, underscoring the escalating public health challenge.

Five-month-old Zisan, son of Jibon Mia from Islampur Upazila, Jamalpur, died at approximately 9:45 AM on Thursday, merely four hours after being admitted to the isolation ward at 5:50 AM. His death certificate indicated measles symptoms compounded by pneumonia and heart failure.

The second fatality was Maruf, a 10-month-old from Kalmakanda Upazila, Netrokona, son of Lal Chan. Admitted on April 25, Maruf succumbed to his illness around 10:00 PM on Thursday, having also suffered from measles symptoms and pneumonia.

Hospital authorities confirmed that the new admissions between Thursday 8 AM and Friday 8 AM raised the total number of children admitted with measles-like symptoms to 996 since March 17. Of these, 911 children have been discharged after recovery, while 63 currently remain under treatment. In the last 24 hours, 28 children were discharged, and one critically ill child was transferred to Dhaka Shishu Hospital.

The Mymensingh Medical College Hospital began seeing a trickle of measles-like cases in its pediatric department in February, with patient numbers sharply increasing by mid-March. In response, the hospital established a dedicated 64-bed isolation ward. Three specialized medical teams are currently deployed to manage and treat the influx of young patients.

Mohammad Mainuddin Khan, Assistant Director for Administration at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, reiterated the severity of the situation, confirming the two additional deaths and the intake of 24 new children with measles symptoms within the past day.
