Missing elderly man reunited with family following repatriation from India

A 68-year-old Bangladeshi man, who had been missing for two months, was reunited with his family on Thursday after being returned by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) through the Dhanuakamalpur border in Jamalpur’s Bakshiganj upazila.

Sasthi Chandra Barman, a resident of Chandlai village in Rajshahi’s Godagari upazila, was officially handed over to his relatives by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel late Thursday afternoon. Prior to the handover, authorities had processed the elderly man at the Bakshiganj Police Station following confirmation of his identity.

According to Imam Hossain, assistant director of the Jamalpur 35 BGB battalion, Barman had been suffering from mental health issues prior to his disappearance. Family members reported that he went missing from his home two months ago, and despite extensive searches, they had been unable to locate him or determine how he crossed into Indian territory.

Bhavani Barman, the younger brother of the recovered man, expressed relief upon his sibling’s return. He noted that the family had remained desperate for news until they identified Sasthi Chandra in footage circulating from the border area, which prompted them to contact the BGB.

Bakshiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mokbul Hossain confirmed that the formal handover process was completed in the presence of law enforcement officials, BGB members, and local journalists. Barman’s brother, son-in-law, and nephew were present at the station to receive him after the necessary legal formalities were fulfilled.
