Mild Earthquake Hits Dhaka and Surrounding Areas

A mild earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale jolted Dhaka and surrounding areas late Monday night, prompting residents to flee buildings in a brief moment of panic. The tremors were felt at approximately 9:28 p.m., according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department identified the epicenter of the seismic activity as Rupganj in the Narayanganj district. While local monitoring agencies initially estimated the magnitude at 4.0, the USGS recorded a slightly higher intensity of 4.4.

There were no immediate reports of structural damage or casualties resulting from the tremor. Seismic activity of this magnitude is considered light, yet its proximity to the densely populated capital caused widespread concern among citizens during the evening hours.
