Measles Claims 9 More Young Lives; 5 in Dhaka

Nine children died from measles or its related symptoms across Bangladesh in the 24 hours leading up to Tuesday morning, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported. The fatalities include three confirmed measles cases and six cases exhibiting measles-like symptoms, highlighting a persistent health challenge in the country.

Of the nine recent deaths, three children with confirmed measles died in Dhaka. The remaining six deaths, attributed to measles-like symptoms, occurred in various regions: two in Barishal, two in Dhaka, one in Rajshahi, and one in Sylhet.

During the same 24-hour period, an additional 1,276 children across the country were reported to have developed measles-like symptoms, the DGHS stated in its Tuesday report.

These latest deaths contribute to a grim tally since March 15, bringing the total number of children who have died with measles-like symptoms to 226. Furthermore, 47 children have succumbed to confirmed measles during the same period.

Since March 15, the DGHS has documented 34,662 children experiencing measles-like symptoms. Of these, 23,348 children required hospitalization for their condition, with 19,991 eventually recovering and being discharged. In total, 4,856 children have been diagnosed with confirmed measles nationwide during this period.
