Man fatally stabbed by cousin during football match dispute in Sylhet

A 28-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the Zakiganj upazila of Sylhet late Wednesday night following a dispute that erupted during a televised football match. The victim, identified as rickshaw driver Alam Ahmad, was killed during a confrontation with his cousin, Parvez Ahmad, over noise complaints.

The incident occurred in Lamagram village within the Khalachara union while residents were gathered to watch a match between England and DR Congo. According to local police, the altercation began when a child’s shouting during the game triggered a verbal exchange between the two cousins. The situation escalated rapidly when Parvez Ahmad reportedly produced a knife and stabbed his cousin before fleeing the scene.

Local bystanders immediately rushed the victim to the Zakiganj Upazila Health Complex, where attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival. Following the attack, police launched an immediate investigation and apprehended 32-year-old Parvez Ahmad at his grandmother’s residence in Madarkhal village. Authorities confirmed that the weapon used in the killing was recovered during the arrest.

Zakiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Abdur Razzaq stated that the dispute was rooted in a minor disagreement over the noise generated during the match. The victim’s body has been transferred to the morgue at Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police are currently in the process of filing formal charges against the suspect.
