Man arrested in Bangladesh over public assault of schoolgirl and youth tied to tree

Police in Gopalganj have arrested 45-year-old Nayan Goldar in connection with the public assault of a schoolgirl and a young man, an incident that sparked widespread outrage after footage of the torture went viral. Goldar, a resident of Rahuthar village in the Kashiani sub-district, was taken into custody early Sunday in the Satpar area of Gopalganj Sadar.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Muksudpur Circle) Nafisur Rahman confirmed the arrest and stated that law enforcement is currently preparing a formal case against the perpetrators. Authorities are continuing their search for other individuals involved in the attack, as investigators work to identify everyone seen participating in the assault.
The incident occurred on July 28 on the grounds of a secondary school in Kashiani. According to reports, the victims were tied to a tree and subjected to physical and mental abuse by a group of people who alleged that the two were involved in a romantic relationship. The attackers recorded the ordeal and subsequently distributed the footage on social media, drawing sharp public condemnation.
The fallout from the assault proved devastating for the student, an eighth-grader, who reportedly attempted suicide by ingesting poison due to the severe emotional distress and public humiliation caused by the incident. She was subsequently admitted to a hospital for emergency medical treatment.
