Sylhet examiner caught grading HSC exam papers at public tea stall

Education board officials in Sylhet apprehended a lecturer on Saturday night for evaluating Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination scripts in a public tea stall. The incident occurred near the main gate of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, where authorities discovered the examiner, Iqbal Hossain, surrounded by hundreds of answer sheets.
Iqbal Hossain, a lecturer at Metro City Women’s College and an examiner for the Sylhet Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, was reportedly grading the papers in the company of friends. According to reports, including those confirmed by board officials to the local press, approximately 400 answer scripts were seized at the scene. Witnesses indicated that the group had been using the tea stall as an ad-hoc grading station since at least Friday night.
Professor Bilkis Yasmin, the board’s controller of examinations, stated that authorities intercepted the teacher after receiving reports of the breach. The board has taken custody of the lecturer and initiated departmental proceedings. While local police were initially involved, the board chose to keep the educator under their own administrative supervision following the filing of a general diary at the local station.
The lecturer, a former student at the university, declined to comment when reached by telephone. One of the individuals present during the incident, identified as a former student activist, claimed she was merely accompanying a friend and denied any personal involvement in the grading process.
Under established regulations, HSC answer scripts are considered highly confidential documents that must be graded in secure, controlled environments. The board has confirmed that a full investigation into the security breach is underway to determine the extent of the unauthorized access and to prevent future compromises of the examination process.
