Madrasa student found hanged in Rampura, one arrested

Police have arrested a madrassa student in connection with the hanging death of a fellow student in Dhaka’s Rampura area. Mohamamd Shihab Hossain, 19, was apprehended by authorities on Thursday.
The victim, a 10-year-old student at the same madrassa, was found hanging on the night of May 19 in the Rampura Police Station jurisdiction. According to Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Harun Or Rashid, preliminary examination of the body suggested the child may have been a victim of sexual assault.
The victim’s mother filed a case at Rampura Police Station naming Shihab and other unknown individuals. The lawsuit includes charges of abetting suicide.
Police official Harun Or Rashid told reporters that Shihab had left the madrassa for his village home before the body was discovered. A police team from Rampura Station later apprehended him at his ancestral home in Pabna. Shihab is currently undergoing initial interrogation. Officials at the madrassa have also been questioned and confirmed allegations of Shihab engaging in inappropriate sexual acts with the younger student.
Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Jahangir Hossain stated that the victim’s mother suspects her son was sexually assaulted, leading to his suicide. A definitive conclusion awaits the forensic autopsy report.
