Life Terms for Duo in Capital Child Kidnap-Murder

Eighteen years after the abduction and murder of an 11-year-old boy in Dhaka’s Kafrul area, a court on Sunday sentenced two individuals to life imprisonment and a third to 14 years. The tragic crime followed an unfulfilled ransom demand, with the boy killed and his body discarded in a river.

Dhaka’s Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 Judge Munshi Md. Mashiur Rahman delivered the verdict. Public Prosecutor Md. Ershad Alam confirmed the details.

Al Amin Gharami and Masud Rana received life sentences for their roles in the crime. Saiful Islam, also known as Chhoto Saiful, was sentenced to 14 years in prison. Each convict was also fined BDT 100,000 (approximately $850), with an additional year of rigorous imprisonment to be served if the fine is not paid.

Of the three convicted, Masud Rana was present in court during the verdict and was subsequently sent to jail. Al Amin Gharami and Saiful Islam remain at large, and arrest warrants have been issued against them.

The tribunal acquitted two other accused, Md. Abdul Motaleb, also known as Mota, and Amirul Islam, also known as Rubel, stating that the allegations against them were not proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

According to the case statement, the victim, Md. Shafiqul Islam alias Milon, disappeared from the North Senpara area of Kafrul on March 6, 2008. His family later received a ransom demand for BDT 200,000. When the ransom was not paid, the culprits strangled the boy to death and subsequently dumped his body in a river in Savar to conceal the crime.

Shafiqul’s father, Shahidul Islam, filed a case at the Kafrul police station. During the trial, the court heard testimony from nine witnesses.
