Law Minister Expects Next Parliamentary Session to Resolve Presidential Election

Law Minister Anisul Huq expressed confidence on Saturday that the election of a new president will take place during the next session of the National Parliament. Speaking to reporters at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka, the minister dismissed the need for a special session to address the vacancy, noting that the constitutional timeline remains sufficient.
Under Article 123(2) of the Constitution, a presidential election must be conducted within 90 days of a vacancy. With the previous term ending on July 24, the legal deadline for the selection is October 24. Since the constitution mandates that parliament must reconvene within 60 days of the previous session’s adjournment on July 15, the minister indicated that the upcoming assembly provides an appropriate window to conclude the electoral process.

Addressing inquiries regarding potential legal challenges against the former president, the Law Minister adopted a cautious stance. When asked about the legal implications of recent cases filed against the former head of state, he stated that the government would evaluate the situation as it develops, noting that it is currently too early to outline a specific judicial procedure. He further emphasized that the constitution provides certain protections for the office of the president and that the government would review these legal safeguards thoroughly before taking further action.
The minister’s comments followed an inaugural session of a seminar focused on human rights violations and justice for victims, organized by the rights advocacy group Odhikar. The event featured addresses from International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam, former Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury—who previously headed the commission of inquiry into enforced disappearances—and journalist and editor Mahmudur Rahman. The discussion was presided over by Odhikar President Tasneem Siddiqui.
