Bangladesh police arrest local official for displaying banned Awami League banners in Comilla

Police in the Titas upazila of Cumilla have arrested a local official for hanging a commemorative banner marking the 77th anniversary of the Awami League, a political organization currently under a ban. Abul Kalam Azad, a 50-year-old member of the Balarampur Union Parishad, was taken into custody Tuesday evening during a police operation at the Batakandi market.
According to local reports, the incident began late Monday night when Azad allegedly hung a banner on two trees adjacent to the Ulukandi Government Primary School field. The banner featured portraits of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Abdus Sabur, the former Member of Parliament for the Cumilla-1 constituency.

The act drew public attention after photographs of the display were widely shared on social media platforms. Upon noticing the activity, authorities initiated a search, leading multiple police teams to track down and apprehend Azad in the Batakandi market area.
Titas Police Station officer-in-charge Momirul Haque confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was processed through the legal system on Wednesday. Following the initial detention, Azad was transferred to the Cumilla District Jail by order of the court.
