Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrest 424 in citywide anti-narcotics sweep

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 424 individuals during a citywide anti-crime crackdown conducted over a 24-hour period ending Thursday night. The operation, which targeted drug trafficking and various criminal activities across the capital, resulted in the filing of 68 separate cases at police stations throughout the city.
The arrests were distributed across all major divisions of the metropolitan area. The Mirpur division recorded the highest number of apprehensions with 97 suspects, followed by the Uttara division with 63, Tejgaon with 55, Wari with 52, Motijheel with 48, Ramna with 41, Gulshan with 39, and Lalbagh with 26. Additionally, the Detective Branch (DB) of the police arrested three individuals.

During the searches, authorities recovered significant quantities of narcotics, including 48 kilograms of cannabis, 5,218 yaba tablets, 15 packets of heroin, two pethidine injections, and four bottles of Phensedyl. Police also confiscated various weapons and illicit items, such as a machete, a knife, a rope, 24 mobile phones, drug paraphernalia, and over 1,100 animals of various species, alongside 75 kilograms of lemons and miscellaneous documentation.
Legal proceedings against those detained are currently underway. This latest enforcement effort marks a sustained push by the DMP to curb crime, following a similar operation in the preceding 24-hour cycle that saw 422 people taken into custody.
