Law Minister Defends National Budget Amid Crackdown on Drug Trafficking in Jhenaidah

Law Minister Anisul Huq has defended the national budget, framing it as a pro-poor financial policy that prioritizes tax relief for the populace. Speaking at the inauguration of a new modern slaughterhouse in Jhenaidah on Wednesday, the minister noted that public sentiment regarding the budget has shifted noticeably this year. He observed that while student-led protests traditionally label annual budgets as anti-poor, the current discourse has pivoted toward complaints regarding price hikes on non-essential items like alcohol and tobacco, indicating a lack of opposition to the budget’s core fiscal measures.
Addressing the audience at the Pabhati Kalahan facility, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to social security and rural development. He highlighted the ongoing distribution of “Farmer Cards” and “Family Cards” across the country, a key pledge from the government’s election manifesto. The minister confirmed that the distribution of family cards was scheduled to commence in the Baroipara village of Shailkupa upazila later in the day.

The new slaughterhouse, constructed at a cost of approximately 108 million taka, represents a broader push for environmental and public health standards. The facility, which sits on 49 decimals of land and began construction in 2023, is equipped with solar power and advanced machinery capable of processing ten cattle and twenty goats per hour. The minister urged local residents to abandon the practice of open-air slaughter, which causes significant environmental degradation, in favor of these modern, hygienic facilities to ensure better public health outcomes.
Turning to the issue of public safety, the law minister reiterated a zero-tolerance policy toward narcotics. He dismissed the concept of extrajudicial solutions, insisting that known drug traffickers should be brought to justice through legal channels and processed through the correctional system. He called on local residents to identify and report dealers to the authorities, asserting that the safety of the district’s population cannot be compromised by a minority of individuals.

The inauguration event was presided over by District Commissioner Md. Noman Hossain. Other notable attendees included Superintendent of Police Mia Md. Ashis Bin Hasan and Jhenaidah District BNP President M.A. Majid. According to municipal administrator Rabindranath Roy, the project, financed by the Livestock and Dairy Development Project (LDDP), is designed to provide a safe and regulated environment for meat processing that aligns with modern sanitary mandates.
