Kushtia Court Sends Two Key Suspects to Jail in Pir Murder Case

A Kushtia district court ordered two high-profile suspects, including a local Jamaat-e-Islami leader, to be sent to jail on Tuesday in connection with the murder of Abdur Rahman, a local spiritual figure known as Peer Shamim. District and Sessions Judge Enayet Kabir Sarker denied the bail pleas of Muhammad Khaja Ahmed, former president of the Kushtia district unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, and Md. Asaduzzaman, president of the Daulatpur unit of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, after they surrendered to the court.
The two suspects had previously secured a six-week anticipatory bail from the High Court, but remained fugitives until their appearance on Tuesday. Following the denial of their bail petitions, court inspector Zahurul Islam confirmed that both men were transferred to the district jail by late afternoon.
Abdur Rahman, a resident of South-West Philipnagar village, was lynched on April 11 by an angry mob that accused him of making derogatory remarks regarding the Quran. The brutal killing prompted the victim’s brother, Fazlur Rahman, to file a formal case with the Daulatpur police station on April 13.
According to investigative officer Sheikh Ali Mortuza, the court’s decision brings the total number of individuals incarcerated in connection with the case to six, including three of the four primary suspects identified in the initial police report. Among those previously detained is Rajib Mistri, who was apprehended by the Rapid Action Battalion, alongside three others captured by local police.
The case remains under active investigation, with the police searching for remaining suspects implicated in the mob violence, which involved an estimated 180 to 200 unidentified individuals in addition to the four formally named in the case filing.
