PM: Comilla Division Possible If Public Demand Is Genuine

Prime Minister Tareq Rahman stated Saturday that the BNP fulfills its electoral promises with unwavering commitment when in power, urging active public cooperation and patience for national reconstruction. Addressing a rally in Lakshmipur market, Barura Upazila, Cumilla, he highlighted the broad public support that led to the BNP forming the government following the February 12 elections.
Rahman emphasized that the administration has already initiated key pledges, including the distribution of “Family Cards” and “Farmer Cards” to households, and has arranged honorariums for religious leaders across approximately 60,000 religious institutions nationwide. He noted the commencement of Family Card distribution to women and the initial rollout of Farmer Cards to farmers, underscoring the party’s dedication to its commitments.

The Prime Minister drew parallels between the nation’s liberation in 1971 and its recent emancipation from authoritarian rule, asserting that the primary task now is reconstruction. He contended that many Asian nations achieving independence concurrently have surpassed Bangladesh due to periods of oppressive governance.
Looking ahead, Rahman outlined plans to ensure business and employment opportunities, foster economic and educational self-reliance for women, support farmers, establish new industries to combat unemployment, and guarantee public safety for all citizens, enabling secure movement and business operations at any hour.

During the rally, local demands were presented, including the establishment of a Cumilla division, an agricultural university in Cumilla, and the expansion of Cumilla Sadar Hospital’s bed capacity from 100 to 250. Rahman responded positively, pledging to pursue the Cumilla division if it reflects genuine public will and assuring that the agricultural university proposal would be discussed with the Education Minister for prompt consideration, given the region’s significant agricultural output and export potential. He indicated that other reasonable demands would be addressed sequentially.
Addressing the current economic challenges, the Prime Minister attributed them to extensive looting and siphoning of national wealth abroad by the previous “autocratic government” over the preceding 16-17 years. He appealed for the public’s patience and hard work to overcome this situation.
Rahman’s itinerary in Cumilla included inaugurating canal re-excavation activities, distributing Family Cards, and participating in district-level organizational meetings before proceeding to Chandpur for further engagements.
The rally was presided over by Zakaria Taher Sumon, President of Cumilla South District BNP and Minister of Housing and Public Works. Also in attendance were Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and Livestock Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid, Members of Parliament Md. Selim Bhuiyan and Mobasher Alam Bhuiyan, Cumilla District Council Administrator Mostofa Mia, Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Yusuf Molla (Tipu), and President of Cumilla Metropolitan BNP Udvatul Bari (Abu), along with other senior leaders. The event was coordinated by Ashiqur Rahman Mahmud (Wasim), General Secretary of Cumilla South District BNP.
Earlier, upon entering the Cumilla district, Prime Minister Tareq Rahman was met with warm receptions from BNP members and the general public at various points along his route.
